ELLIE & TED

FOUNDERS

Teddy was born and raised in El Dorado, and Ellie in Wichita, KS. They met playing kickball in 2004, started dating in 2008, and were married in 2012. They both graduated from Wichita State University, and currently live in Wichita with their dog-child, Maebe. Ted is the Product Manager of Metro Entrepreneurship at Network Kansas and Ellie is the Admissions Director at Trinity Academy. They try to visit Ghana every six months.

DESTINY

SOCIAL WELFARE OFFICER

Destiny is a dear friend to Eight Oaks, and has been on staff as our full-time social welfare representative since July 2014. He is responsible for much of our progress in becoming legally registered in Ghana and facilitating connections with government officials. And perhaps most importantly, he has been instrumental in initiating and growing healthy relationships between the girls, their families, and the staff. On any given week day, he is likely filing reports, keeping track of expenses for the Yellow House, and listening to Chris Tomlin. He speaks excellent English and calls the Kriwiels once a week to give updates about the girls and the house. Destiny loves the Lord and walks a fine line between professionalism and compassion: we are forever grateful for his devotion and hard work.

BERNARD & CELESTINE

GHANANIAN DIRECTORS OF OPERATIONS

Bernard and Celestine are “Grandpa” and “Grandma” to the Great Eight. This entire endeavor would not have been possible without their willingness to help and hearts to serve and glorify the Lord. Bernard is a retired professor who works on staff at the local church and has accompanied us through every stage of this process: from filing paperwork and buying a house to travelling with us to bring the girls home. Celestine is a kindergarten teacher who, when she is not at school, is either found commandeering the kitchen or sitting under the mango tree with the girls in her lap, telling stories. We love them from the bottom of our hearts and cannot exaggerate how critical and irreplaceable they are!

MERCY & HELEN

CARETAKERS

Mercy and Helen were found and hired through the local church by Bernard. Mercy is 22 years old, adored as an older sister, and lives in the Yellow House. Her mother, Helen, comes during the day and functions in a maternal role for the girls—they call her “Mama” and love her deeply. In many ways, their jobs are the most critical of this operation: because the girls are not fluent in English, they mainly communicate with the Ghanaian staff. Additionally, Mercy and Helen, being strong Ghanaian women themselves, are largely responsible for teaching everything from making meals to washing clothes and all the pieces in between. We are deeply grateful for them and for how well they love the girls.
